Genesis 3:22-23
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.
The tree of life proves that God had different plans for mankind. He created both trees, one as a test, the other as a purpose. He knew what He created. He knew there was the potential that His creation would disobey Him by eating off the tree of knowledge. He knew He created something that could be guided (or misguided) by temptation. He drew everyone’s attention (Adam, Eve, and the enemy) to the ONE thing that was forbidden to see if mankind was deserving of the true prize: eternal life with God in the garden of Eden. To be with Him, to be His helper, for all of eternity.
Maybe the goal was to eventually have us eat of the tree of knowledge, once He knew that our intention was to be more like Him and not to surpass our betray Him. Or maybe after Adam and Eve passed, the tree of knowledge would be destroyed and they would eat from the tree of life so we could live a blissful life with God forever. No stress. No worries. Just a peaceful life with God.
Regardless of what was meant to be, mankind cannot have it.
God, however, did not abandon us. He stayed, and still stays, with us through everything to help us navigate this scary, confusing, and unknown world and life that we now must live. He creates new goals, new tests, new paths for us to take. Every day, every hour, every minute, every second, is a chance to prove to God that you got this. That you understand. That you will not disobey. He knows that we’re not perfect, but He created us with the potential to be.
Just like Adam and Eve, we are now facing the ultimate battle: obedience vs disobedience. The consequence and prize has always remained the same. Being casted away from the light of God forever, or eternal life with God in paradise.
